Math Tutoring & Test Preparation ( SSAT / SAT / ACT )

                                                           Honolulu / Oahu / Hawaii

Private School Admission Results

In the past two years, 86 students (15 for Fourth Grade Punahou Entrance, 59 for Sixth / Seventh Grade Entrance, 12 for Ninth Grade Entrance) went through my private school admission prep program. To date, 71 were accepted or waitlisted at Punahou, Iolani and/or Kamehameha Schools. I believe this to be a good success rate given the high applicant to acceptee ratios at these institutions.

What is the purpose of these SSAT test preparation study guides?

A pervasive characteristic of SSAT private school admission exams for current fifth through ninth graders is that they are very difficult, oftentimes featuring Math / Reading / Verbal test questions one to two grade levels above your child’s current public or private school curriculum. The SSAT targets a small, highly competitive group of students applying for top private schools across the nation.

To better prepare the dozens of fifth thru ninth graders I coach each year, I have used my 10+ years of teaching / test-preparation / curriculum-development experience to create study guides that closely approximate the sequence, scope, phrasing and difficulty level of actual SSAT exams.

The study guides show you how to compute your child's raw score and identify its corresponding scaled scare which can be compared to the average score ranges of students admitted to Hawaii's top private schools. Thousands of applicants have worked through the hundreds of SSAT practice problems contained within these preparation guides to enhance their candidacies in the private school admission process.

Note to Parents purchasing SSAT study guides from Education Works:

The SSAT is an intentionally difficult test designed to separate "great test-takers" from "good test-takers". If your child is in fourth grade (preparing for sixth grade entrance) or having difficulty (as most do), have him or her do the "easier" problems first. "Easier" problems are located at the beginning of each Verbal, Math and Reading section.

Math Concepts Practice for the SSAT: LOWER Level” can be used by seventh graders preparing to take the UPPER level SSAT exam for entrance to ninth grade. Seventh graders in Pre-Algebra would benefit from the math concepts practice contained within this study guide to transition to similar but more difficult upper level math problems.

If your child is in seventh or eighth grade preparing for ninth grade Kamehameha Schools admission, you should purchase 7 Practice Tests for the SSAT: LOWER Level” and “Math Concepts Practice for the SSAT: LOWER Level”. For mathematics aptitude at this level, Kamehameha Schools tests mostly for Pre-Algebra and some first-year Algebra achievement.

Dear Parent,

Thank you for taking an interest in my math and test preparation programs.

As a math and standardized exam preparation teacher/tutor of 12+ years with experience ranging from Arithmetic to Calculus to SSAT / SAT / ACT / GRE / GED / Praxis TestPrep (all sections), I am familiar with the sequence and scope of the math concepts and test preparation skills a student needs to know to reach goals in middle school, high school, college and graduate school.

As a former student, I understand how maddening math and test preparation can be!  The primary duty of a tutor is neither to dispense textbook information nor to regurgitate a teacher’s lecture.  Rather, it is to mind-meld with the student and tap into the recesses of the young person’s learning personality.  It is only after a teacher / tutor gains insight into this learning personality, unique to each child, that a tutoring relationship can begin to reach its optimal potential.  Successful tutoring must involve a student-centered teaching approach, and rely heavily on hands-on interaction.

A daunting roadblock to student comprehension of higher-level concepts is the clashing of this learning personality between instructor (of whom 80% are concrete sequential) and student (e.g. abstract random) which too often results in school anxiety and parental dissatisfaction.  With Oahu student-to-teacher ratios escalating, let personalized tutoring sessions save your child hours / days / weeks / months of unnecessary frustrated confusion by unleashing his or her unlimited analytic potential to engage higher-level learning endeavors.  No complex terminology!  No abstract symbolism!
